Taking it Easy
According to the oracle that IS Carrie Muskat, we shouldn’t expect to see Prior or Wood pitching anytime soon:
MESA, Ariz. — Mark Prior and Kerry Wood both are making progress, but neither was expected to appear in the first week of Cactus League games, Cubs manager Lou Piniella said Sunday.
Prior threw 35 pitches to hitters in a live batting practice session around 8:30 a.m. MT on Sunday at Fitch Park. So far, so good for the right-hander, who spent the winter strengthening his shoulder.
“He cut some balls loose, he felt good after the workout was over, no pain, no discomfort,” Piniella said of Prior, limited to nine starts last season. “It’s good news when we keep these guys going forward.”
And of course, Lou knows exactly how Prior pitched because, knowing his history and how this season pretty much hinges on Prior’s success, he wants to stay on top of his progress so as to discontinue the Cubs’ unfortunate history of giving out false information to the media. Right? Right, Lou?
Piniella missed Prior’s throwing session.
“I went to chapel, so I didn’t see it,” he said
Oh.
Â

Chapel? Is he non-denominational or something?
You have to kind of wonder if the spin machine isn’t ready in full effect on Prior and Wood.
I can already envision a Spring Training full of “boy are they doing great, no aches or pains at all, passing every test with flying colors but…they just aren’t quite ready to go out there yet” quotes.
And then shortly before opening day…the flare ups. “Man, it just came out of nowhere. Shoulder trouble. Ain’t that a kick in the head? I mean, they were both doing so well!”
never thought about that really, but considering Hendry’s MO, I wouldn’t be the slightest bit suprised.
For now I’ll take some faith into what Prior has to say for himself, I get the distinct feeling I’ll regret it though.
I’m not even going to bother anymore.
Oh all right I already have bothered and am bothered as we speak.
I just can’t help but sense disaster looming over us.
don’t blame you, not when Miller’s velocity is down and we have Cesar Izturis as our SS.
I think Lou has the right idea though, being in chapel praying during Prior’s throwing session.
I know I would be too if I were him.
I’d be praying harder for Izturis….
So he authenticates everything through heresay and speculation? Oh this is going to be a GREAT year!
What? No appearances in the games? That is a horrible sign. Not good. That’s how it always starts.
what do you mean?
‘no appearances in the first week’
That’s what I mean. They are already starting to push them back. I hope it’s not because they do this every year. Maybe they just want to give other people a chance first.
Probably a personal request from Hendry.
Jim: Hey Lou, start Jason (Marquis) so he can wow everyone and people won’t think I’m an idiot.
Lou: Yeah, Jim, about that, the guys in camp really weren’t ‘feeling’ Jason, so we took him out back and shot him, if it makes you feel any better we still have the team dog, Rex, he doesn’t move very quickly or get up, at all, but he can get the ball over the plate quicker than Jason could.
Apparently, Prior was back to throwing on flat ground yesterday, at his own request.
THAT is how it always starts.
ohhh! that makes sense.
Why do I get the feeling he sneezed this morning and hurt his shoulder?
In the mean time, if you want to see something borderline obsessive, go check out Gammons’ latest article on Roger Clemens. (I will kick you in your face if you say the Rocket)
You guys, do we want to blog the Oscars? Should I set up a diary?
Or, we would do it here, I guess. . . .
hate the oscars, BLEH
Oscars = dumb.
Even the razzies were dumb this year.
But we can make fun of what everyone is wearing! I live for that kind of thing. Plus, you can all bitch and whine about the nominees and the winners.
Sure! I don’t really have knowledge about movies, but I always like to see how people dress for things like this.
It always amazes me how people can dress horribly for an event like the Oscars. I mean don’t they look in the mirror? Or are they just trying to start a new trend or something? Some of the mistakes are just so obvious.
pshht…you’re just not in the know as far as fashion goes.
I’m in for some smarmy Oscar talk.
I should be around anyway.
Oscar running diary?? I’m in! But if the Dixie Chicks start performing, I’m turning the TV off.
Heh, I have a friend, he calls them the Chixie Di-um…weiners…
that’s a lame name….doesn’t even rhyme…Chixie Weiners? Pssht.
It’s Chixie Di-um…weiners. Get it right.
He’s partly brain damaged. I’m impressed he made it that far. Usually he goes into siren sounds at some point and puts putty in his nose.
Actually, now that I think about it, Chixie Weiners is hilarious.
You sir are humorless.
It seems to me that anything we get from Wade Miller is a bonus. Zambrano, Lilly, Marquis, Hill and Prior will be the starting rotation (provided injuries are a thing of the past). There is Cotts, Marshall and Miller if anyone is down on opening day, although I am more concerned about the health of Marshall and Miller than I am about Marquis and Prior.
If we go into 2007 with no expectations of Miller, he could turn into the Glendon Rusch of 2004. He could also be the Rusch of 2006 as well. That’s the fun of baseball.
Yabbut, I just don’t know how you can be a successful starter or long reliever without a decent fastball.
Exactly.
Unless Miller develops pinpoint Maddux-esque control and movement, I don’t see how he makes it half the year.
What was Wade’s fastball at to begin with?
low to mid 90s if memory serves.
What is it now?
One.
How bad are we talking about in loss of velocity? If he’s low 90’s and lost maybe 5 on it, that would put him in range of about 86-89, still not bad for a middle releif.
If he’s abandonning his fastball, I would think we’re talking more like 80 mph.
I either have ADD or I missed the part where he’s abandoning it. I wouldn’t even put that in a set-up role. Then again it’s Bobby Howry in the set up, and Howry is the man.
agreed as far as Wade Miller goes. I’m more looking forward to what our prospects do this year. Pawalek, Veal, Patterson, Samarafdjkl;asdf. All of em’.
I agree with Chris.
Miller is filler. It’s the propects we need to be watching closely.
I’m looking forward to Miller… High Life that is.
Wade’s lost 8 MPH off of his heater. His heater is more like a refrigerator.
And about all this Prior angst. He wasn’t supposed to throw at all yesterday. It was supposed to be an off-day. Prior threw at his own behest. If anything we should be throwing him a frickin party for testing his arm ahead of time.
